Anderson Al Wazni, MSW
Doctoral Candidate, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Anderson Al Wazni, MSW is a Doctoral Candidate at UNC-Chapel Hill where she focuses her research on climate change induced natural disasters, state fragility, and violent conflict. Her current dissertation project Fragile States of America: An Exploration of State Fragility and U.S. Disaster Preparedness has been awarded the 2024-2025 national American Association of University Women (AAUW) dissertation fellowship to fund her final year of research. In addition to her climate change work and advocacy, Anderson also frequently contributes to anti-Islamophobia public education, community organizing consulting, and continuing education seminars for professionals engaging Muslim identified populations. She is an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Smith College School for Social Work’s graduate MSW program, where she instructs and course coordinates for the policy sequence. Anderson also designed and instructs upper-level coursework in climate change justice and non-violent resistance to tyranny.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Anderson strongly believes in the importance of transforming academic knowledge into tangible social change. In response to the collapse of dialogue within academic spaces this past year, Anderson paired with fellow lab futurist, artist, and social worker to launch ArmisticeZines.com. The project has received funding through Smith College Jandon Center’s Project for Women and Social Change fellowship. This multi-year project aims to promote social change and nonviolent dialogue through art, production of zines, and community building events, with the intention to spread the project to other campuses.
